Atypically, Holy Week begins on the last Friday of Lent. There are two unmissable appointments: in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore there is the “greeting” to the Christ scourged at the Column and the proclamation of the new confreres. The most intense part of this moment is the cry “culonna“, an invocation to the flagellated Christ.
In the same moment in the church of the SS. Annunziata holds the procession of the “Santa Cascia”, a silver reliquary urn of the 18th century, which contains the Santa Spina (according to the belief it is a fragment of Jesus’ crown of thorns).
After the procession a suggestive living re-enactment of the Passion of Christ animates Corso Garibaldi and piazza SS. Annunziata.
